Evening Light Holiness Church was established in the early part of the twentieth century. The people of Hayestown had a desire to have a church in their community. Mr. Tom Hayes donated a plot of land on which the church could be erected. The sons of Mr. Wesley McKoy along with some others in the community took on the responsibility of building a church.
It was obvious from the start that Wesley’s son David was to be the leader of the group. Others instrumental in the building of the church were: Arthur, George, Jimmy, Lillie and Norman McKoy; also Elijah Robinson, Deams Henry, and Robert Kerr. David had a relationship with God that directed him with the construction and continuation of the church. While looking for building materials in Tomahawk, David was instructed by God to look for a building with a bundle of fodder and a pair of shoes inside. When David found the building with the fodder and shoes, it reassured him that God was with him. Being short of the amount of money required to purchase the building, David was trusting God, as he rode his bicycle to Tomahawk any way to make the deal. While riding, his eyes fell on a fence beside the road. Entangled in the fence was a five-dollar bill; the exact amount he was short for the purchase.
The old building was torn down and the lumber was used to build the church in Hayestown. Shortly after the “Prayer House”, as it was called, was completed, a lady named Rosa J Robinson of Savannah, Georgia came to Hayestown preaching Holiness. She married Tom Hayes and became pastor of the church. After a problem arose with the land, Mr. Deems Henry gave consent for the church to be moved to his land. The church was renamed Evening Light Holiness Church. Elder David McKoy was led by God to become pastor of the church. He remained pastor of the church until his death in 1980.
In 1969 the members purchased a plot of land from Mr. George Manuel of Clinton, NC. Mr. Eddie Worthy was contracted to build the new church on Airport Road in Garland, NC. The first service in the new church was held on the third Sunday in September 1971.
After the death of Pastor David McKoy, for many years of waiting and trusting God to send us the RIGHT pastor, he sent us David's youngest son. Rev John T. McCoy entered the Ministry as a Local Preacher at Wallace Chapel AMEZ Church, located in Summit, New Jersey, in April 2003. After Relocating to Beaufort, South Carolina in February 2007, he started attending Evening Light and in November 2011, he was appointed Pastor at the church he first started his Christian journey when his father was pastoring there..
On December 12, 2017, The Evening Light Holiness Church Building on Airport Road was destroyed by fire. Having as its motto: “Evening Light Holiness Church is a church that four walls cannot hold”, God provided us with another vacated church at 50 West Third in Garland, NC at which His Word continued to be preached. On October 29, 2018 this church was purchased and is now the new home of Evening Light Holiness Church .
By the grace of God, The Evening Light Church Family was blessed to be able to purchase and renovate this existing church, located at 50 West Third in Garland, NC.
